Nexi executive says group interested in digital euro, no formal talks with ECB

Nexi (NEXII.MI) is interested in working on a digital version of the euro, but there have been no formal discussions with the European Central Bank (ECB), according to Saverio Tridico, the Italian payment group’s corporate and external affairs director.

Nexi, one of Europe’s largest payment companies, is collaborating with the European Central Bank on the development of a digital euro, according to Nexi’s CEO, Paolo Bertoluzzo. Bertoluzzo stated during an interview at the Money 20/20 conference:

‘ We are engaging with the European Central Bank and contributing to the design of the future digital euro because we believe that it can be a positive force in the evolution of digital payments”.

Nexi, one of Europe’s largest payment companies, is collaborating with the European Central Bank on the development of a digital euro, according to Nexi’s CEO, Paolo Bertoluzzo. Bertoluzzo stated during an interview at the Money 20/20 conference:

: We’re starting to talk about a new version of cash. That’s the way they think about it.”

The EU is lagging behind countries like China, which has made significant progress on its CBDC initiative, which is a digital version of the renminbi. According to ECB president Christine Lagarde, the ECB is only now beginning to look into the digital euro. The inquiry phase might last two years, after which the CBDC development would begin immediately.
