Arm introduces new chip technology for smartphone gaming

SoftBank Group Corp.'s British chip technology business, Arm Ltd, introduced a suite of new semiconductor innovations on Tuesday aimed at helping video games on smartphones look better while preserving battery life.

The most recent products are graphics processing units, or GPUs, which are most commonly utilized for visual processing in gaming. Arm generates revenue by licensing its blueprints to chip firms like MediaTek Inc, which uses them to create chips for Android-based smartphones.

On Tuesday, Arm updated its intentions for CPUs, or central processing units, which are the main brains of computers. Arm's goal in both scenarios is to improve chip performance while using less electricity.

The latest drive to develop mobile chips comes as Arm clients like Apple Inc and Qualcomm Inc reduce their reliance on the company.

While Apple and Qualcomm continue to pay licensing fees to Arm to ensure that their processors function with software built for Arm-based chips, they now design much more essential elements of their chips themselves rather than relying on Arm-made designs.

“Our latest suite of compute solutions for consumer devices will continue to raise the threshold of what’s possible in the mobile market,” said Arm executive Paul Williamson in a blog announcing the new products.

“For developers, making these immersive real-time 3D experiences even more compelling and engaging requires more performance.”
