Amazon (AMZN.O) debuted its Amazon Prime service in Poland on Tuesday, offering free delivery and video streaming, sending shares in Allegro, a rival Polish e-commerce platform, lower. The launch of Amazon's Polish site in March heightened competition in Poland's burgeoning e-commerce market. "We are very pleased with the way Polish customers accepted the Amazon. pl service launched at the beginning of this year," Mourad Taoufiki, Amazon. pl, said in a statement.
Amazon's Prime program will cost 49 zlotys ($12.35) per year, according to the company. Allegro's stock was down 3.7 percent at 0805 GMT, despite the fact that it's Smart! service is likewise 49 zlotys per year and includes free delivery on orders above 40 zlotys.
Amazon's announcement, which came just a few months after the company's entry in Poland, was unexpected, according to mBank analyst Pawel Szpigiel.
"It appears that Amazon has a strong thirst for the Polish market," he remarked. Allegro did not respond to a request for comment right away.
